"I Will Survive" with Gloria Gaynor

Yesterday TV4 started a new season of Idol, Idol 2005.
Everything looked the same: The jury was the same and as evil as ever, people had no self-criticism and sang as bad as ever....and people looked ugly, cried, and couldn't understand how their version of "Proud Mary" (without hitting a note) didn't succeed.

Everything was the same except from one thing - nobody sang "I Will Survive"!
Of course I was chocked!!
Not as a gay-man or anything as prejudice...
...No, it’s just that the old disco-slash-gay-anthem "I Will Survive" is the song everybody always sings in these kinds of shows.
But not in this program...

...or at least that was what I thought.
When the program almost was over and i felt safe and warm...suddenly in a small medley it appeared for 5-10 seconds.
I Will Survive!
Of course she was screwed...

...so lets make the song of today a mantra for my flight tomorrow instead.
I really, really hate flying.

"Television" with Marcus Landgren

Right now I’m eagerly waiting for the autumn TV-season to kick off in the U.S.
There are soooo many good series that has to be followed for another season – and probably a bunch that also need to be followed for their first one.

I’m almost finished with last year’s series, but have almost ¾ of season two of "The O.C" left...and ironically "The O.C" is the first show to have its premiere this autumn.

Well, I guess I have to spend more time in my TV-sofa the coming weeks.
Here are the start dates for "my shows" this September:

The O.C September 8th
Gilmore Girls September 13th
Lost September 21st
CSI:NY - September 21st
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - September 22nd
Joey - September 22nd
Desperate Housewives September 25th
Alias September 29th
Will&Grace September 29th

My god.
I can hardly wait!

"Patience" with George Michael

Yesterday, when I should get something to eat, there was an alcoholic in front of me in the queue that refused to pay for his pizza. The conversation went something like:
"You have to pay 50SEK for your pizza!"
"But I already paid!"
"That was for the beer, now you have to pay for your pizza."
"I didn’t order a beer!"
"Well, maybe your friend ordered it, but you drank it and he only paid for his!"
"But I gave you 50SEK!"
"Yes, but then you have to pay for your pizza now."
"But I already paid"
"Well, then you have to pay for the beer."
"But I gave you 50SEK!!"

That still went on when I managed to sneak my 50SEK (I haven’t had a beer) to another pizza-man, admiring the first pizza-mans temper and patience.

So today before me at the line to get into my gym I suddenly found my self in a similar situation. In front of me this time was a 20-something girl trying to unlock her previous locked (due to sickness or something) gym card. This conversation went something like:
"We have to see your deal before we can unlock your card."
"But I usually exercise at SATS Kompassen"
"Well, then you have to go there so they can take the lock of your deal!"
"But that’s outrageous since I’m here now. You have to fix it!"
"But if you signed your deal and locked your card at SATS Kompassen, you have to unlock it there."
"But I signed my deal here! Don’t you hear what I’m saying??"
"I thought you said you signed it elsewhere…hmmm…I can’t find it here."
"Well, I usually exercise at SATS Kompassen."

That still went on when I managed to sneak my gym card to another girl at the desk and proceed into the gym for some lifting of weights.

I don’t know if these two stories are similar enough to make some point…but I do know I’m happy to be able to take my fights at work by mail…or at least without some poor guy overhearing me further down the line…since my patience is no way near the patience of the pizza-guy and the gym-guy.

I’d go berserk all over the place.

"Vinnaren Tar Allt" with Gunilla Backman

Every Friday, I and some of my co-workers play floor-ball at the lunch break.

Before we started this little exercise tradition some years ago, I had never participated in any kind of team sport (well at least not by free will…they use to force you at school), but it is very fun and you get your daily dose of exercise (and may have a beer after work without feeling guilty later in the day).

One thing I have found out since we started this floor-ball thing is that I’m not a very bad looser. Not at all, actually. I can cheer a nice goal for the other team, and even if I loose all my matches one Friday, I really don’t care that much.

But what I also have found out is that I’m a very, very bad winner.
I point fingers, sing, dance, cheers, and shouts mean things to the other team when I score or if we win.

I guess that’s not a very nice feature, either…

"Desperate Love" with Pernilla Wahlgren

You really have to feel sorry for Pernilla Wahlgren.
At least all the tabloids seem to tell us that
today
Pernilla’s former husband Emilio has threatened to kill her (and her boyfriend, mother, brothers and friends) and she has now turned in some taped phone conversations to the police.
So far, so good.
Emilio seems to be a supreme loony and it can’t be nice to have people threatening to kill you.
What I don’t understand is why you have to tell the press? You’d think that most families would try to hide some tragedies like this?
But not the Wahlgrens obviously.
Can it be that simple that Pernilla would like to do anything else with her life than play Pippi and Sandy in Grease, and need a bit of media and public sympathy to get a record company to release a new single with her?
Nooooo…
Not even Pernilla “My song was number two after fame in Melodifestivalen 2002 but nobody remember it and nobody bought the record since Fame and Alcazar stole all the attention” Wahlgren can be that desperate.
Or can she?

"747" with Kent

Since the first time I heard the new Depeche Mode single "Precious", I have tried to figure out which song from Kent it reminds me of.
Not that it has taken over my life ...but more like that every time the DM songs starts at my iPod or at the radio I think of Kent...but I haven’t been able to figure out what song it is.

But today I finally figured it out!

We’ve been having a sort of Kent day here at our room at work (it goes with the mood and the weather today) and – just a moment ago – 2.25 into a song the exactly same synth loop as in "Precious" appear!

...and ironically it appears in what is considered to be one of the most well known and best Kent-songs ever made.
Maybe THE best song if you ask people generally - it always wins the "Best Kent Song Polls" by far.The song they used to end all their concerts with (until the latest tour), the single that cemented their place as the biggest band in Sweden, and the best song of their best album.

747

Just test it!
Compare the sound 2.25 into the album version of "747" to "Precious".
Cool.

I can’t believe I didn’t get that sooner...
...and I guess it will make my Depeche-loving friends very happy to hear that when Kent are at their best, they actually sound like Depeche Mode...or maybe it is vice verca? I guess it doesn’t matter since DM and Kent have about the same (super devoted) fans.

Now I can listen to "Precious" and think about how good that song actually is and nothing else. I guess that's at least one positive thing a quite boring, rainy thursday in August.

"The Importance of Being Idle" with Oasis

The previous weekend I happened to catch the latest Oasis video on the Swedish music channel ZTV - and it was quite a chock!

I was in the military service in 1995, and my fellow soldier Magnusson told me he should play some of the best pop-songs ever written….and then he played "Champagne Supernova", "Live Forever", and (the yet unreleased) "Wonderwall"…and I was totally stunned. For the following years Oasis was the biggest thing (but I was also quite a Blur-fan those days too, in spite of the rivalry) and the brit-pop era were at its peak.

But the big chock wasn’t that I realized that it has been ten (amazing, but even so) years since I started to listen to Oasis….and it wasn’t that the video for "The Importance of Being Idle" was superb either. It was really great to see a good video for a change… Something that’s neither stuffed with half-naked chicks in bikinis shaking their asses, nor jammed with CGI-effects - or just simply boring, strange and pretentious.
This one (directed by Dawn Shadforth, the man behind Kylie’s "In Your Eyes" & "Can't Get You Out of My Head" videos, I found out later) shot in black&white and starring the Welsh comic-genius, Rhys Ifans (from "Notting Hill"-fame) as a singing and dancing funeral director…and the Gallagher-brothers simply figuring as extras in the background… is just beautiful and perfect for the song.

No, the mot chocking part has to be that Oasis still can make a single for me to fall in love with…

"The Importance of Being Idle" is simply the best they have recorded since anything on "(What’s the Story) Morning Glory", and their best single for ages. The spirit of Beatles is (as always) floating over Noel and Liam…but now the also sounds like "Soundtrack of Our Lives"…and I love it.

I don’t know if it is a hit. The Oasis-backlash is bigger than their egos, and I guess they would have to release something completely different to be taken to grace by the critics and lost fans again…

But for me this is enough.
A good song, reminding me of times past, and a beautiful video.
That’s all I ask of a pop-song.

Yesterday, my colleague Erik left our common office room after a extremely boring day (with sun and 28 degrees Celsius outside) saying:

"Brother and Sister" with Erasure

Short notes of today:

Yesterday I celebrated my 75th song of the day...but this is the 77th blog according to Blogger’s counter. I guess I will have to investigate the miss-match and fix that for the next recap.

I don’t know how a person can be this tired without being dead sick...or just dead.

My sister is living with me for three days now, and it is really nice to have some company on the power walks in the morning...and it also gives me the opportunity to have one of my favourite Erasure songs as the song of the day... Unfortunately they skipped it at the concert in Copenhagen I saw this Eastern...but what the heck. That was one hell of a trip anyway. (The trip to Copenhagen that is...nothing else).

"They" with Jem

As you may have noticed I have stopped publishing my Best/Worst-list on this blog.
It got a bit boring since I always wrote it in Swedish (here) first, and then translated it...
...so now you have to learn to live without that (or just learn to read Swedish...which you probably already have...so just go to the other blog on Sundays then dammit!).

But today I premiere a new hot list at this blog.
It might not turn out to be weekly...but anywho...it is a bit more typecasted for this blog...it's the:

Top ten Music List

This Week/Last Week/Peak/Weeks on Chart/Artist – Song

01/NE/01/01/
Jem - They
02
/NE/02/01/
Sugababes – Push the Button
03
/NE/03/01/
Goldfrapp – Ooh La La
04
/NE/04/01/
Siobhan Fahey - Pulsatron
05
/NE/05/01/BlocParty – Banquet [Phones Disco Edit]

Jem – Flying High
09
/NE/09/01/
Goldfrapp – Lovely 2 C U
10/NE/10/01/
Saint Etienne – Milk Bottle Symphony

What can I say...I'm a sucker for those English girl bands.

...and of course the number one song of the list every week will turn out to be the song of the day...if it hasn't already been there...then it is number two...and so on.

"Milk Bottle Symphony" with Saint Etienne

Today I have a big delivery at work, I have to go to the gym, and I also have to go and take some photographs for an article I’ve written for the paper QX…
So I have (like in the cooking shows on TV) prepared this blog in advance.

Just put it in the microwave and re-heat it and you’ll find out that it is about one of my favourite songs (wow, it is actually a blog about music today too…that’s two days in a row…might be a record for me) today.
Or well…actually yesterday.
Nah, you get it.

2 minutes. 900 W. *pling*
Done!

Just as she pours the tea
She's visseling randomly
A Milkbottle symphony
....
Jumping on 43
Humming uncontiously
A Milkbottle symphony

Isn't that true poetry?
A bit "childish" maybe.
But anyway.
Fabulous song.

"It Hurts" with Lena Philipsson

Even if this is a blog connected to a song every day, I have noticed it is strangely little blogging about music.

Right now I have a very hard time to find something new to listen to. There seems to be no new CDs at all that excites even a little…so my iPod is sadly stuck on random playing of old songs over and over again.

They say that of all our senses the sense of smelling is the one that the brain most strongly connects to different things. Well, I guess I cant argue with science, but listening to different music it is interesting how you connect different songs and artists to different times, places and over all, friends.

If I hear Pet Shop Boys I immediately think of my friend Johan (who is a fanatic fan and who has got all PSB records ever made I guess), and if I hear Scissor Sisters I always think of Andreas (because our common interest for Scissors Sisters where one thing that made us friends in the first place). I actually think of Andreas when I hear of Depeche Mode also…and Kylie. But sometimes Kylie also makes me think of the time my best friend Ante, partly when he left a party when I put on a "Best of Kylie"-record, and partly that he in spite of his hate of Kylie actually made me a Kylie-CD for one of my birthdays.
Another very strong memory is when I hear something from the first album from The Strokes…that is so obvious Javad…and memories from that boring party which ended with both of us sitting in front of the stereo listening to the album over and over again and for every new drink more and more agreeing on that this was the best album since Oasis’ "(Whats the Story) Morning Glory”. But Javad is also Kent, of course. And ZZ Top’s "I Can’t Stop Rockin’" is so much V0K-96 that it is subject for its own blog.

I wonder if there are some music that people always connect with me?
I guess there is…
But I do not think it is U2 or Kylie or Kent or any other of my favorite artists or bands.
No.
I guess I always will be the person thinks of when the hear some Swedish schlager.
I guess I’m the Lena Ph guy…
…and that kind of hurts.

"Yellow Submarine" with Beatles

Yesterday I suddenly found myself in a yellow spot.

I had a yellow t-shirt, ridiculously yellow socks (well, those two items were planned to go together, I admit that), writing at the worlds most yellow post-it with a yellow marker, drinking my coffee out of a yellow coffee-mug, and having the sun beaming right at my face through the window.
It was a bit of yellow overload.

By the way, I have heard that yellow is the colour the Swedes hate the most.
Abroad they connect yellow with lemon and freshness and products that are yellow will sell better…
…in Sweden we connect yellow with urine!
Seriously.
Several things that usually are yellow abroad (like shampoo and washing powder and stuff) are actually green in Sweden, and things connected to citruses are sometimes changed to limes.

So I guess that’s why I was so amazed by my yellow little moment that I actually found it worth bloging about.

Why can't she just behave so we can see her in a good movie once again?

"34an" with Per Myrberg

On my little trip to Backaplan yesterday, I had to take buss 34 to get home.
That wouldn’t have been something to blog about if (well, I’m not sure it is anyway, but still…) it hasn’t been that this weekend is the last for the classic Gothenburg buss 34 to exist.

Tomorrow it will be replaced by the new, flashier buss 17 - a more modern, faster line. And nobody is happier than I.

Not that I usually go by buss 34, I almost always take the trams, but now it will be different. In the morning and in the evenings it will actually go directly from my home to my work…and for the first time in my life I will get a direct connection between my home and my work.
That’s really quite astonishing.

So long live buss 17, cork up the Champagne, and sing the lines from the song of today:

"All Things Dull & Ugly" with Monty Python

Today I had to go to work since I had forgotten my glasses there (yapp, it’s finally confirmed – I’m going senile at 32) and on my way home I decided to stop and pick some stuff up for the party (at Hilda’s) that I’m going to this evening.

So, I went to "Backaplan", which is really some sort of big parking lot with different stores around it, and went into one of the little malls there.
Well…
I stated this summer that I had been to one of the ugliest malls of Sweden…I might have a rain check on that one.

Picture this:
Take a large shoebox, put hundreds of unglamorous and fat looking people and put them in it, make them believe it’s still the eighties, and then force them to by their ugly clothes at store called things like "Cheapy Charlie".

I ran out of there.

Even if my work isn’t THAT hard to do, I guess you need my 4,5 years of education just to understand all the millions of two- and three word abbreviations that everybody are using here.

"Den Siste Mohikanen" with Lars Vegas Trio

Two thoughts about the ongoing Göteborgskalaset“ -the yearly town festival here in Gothenburg, ten days in August every year.
  1. People will gladly queue for 1,5 hours to buy a Hungarian Langos for 50SEK – a piece of deeply fried bread with some sour cream on top (and if you want to pay an extra 20SEK you can make it West Coast and ad six small prawns), and it is simultaneously the only type of food that’s worth more points at the Weight Watchers than a pizza...
Nobody seems to know (or just care about) that the exactly same type of food can be bought on the exactly same spot all year – but at half the prize (well, you might not be able to by it West Coast”) and without any queue at all…
  2. During Göteborgskalaset you are more likely to meet an indian (not a person from the country India, but a native American…or at least a war-painted guy with a lot of feathers on their head) playing a pan-pipe on Avenyn, than to meet an actual Gothenburger…

By the way…my god…Gothenburger is actually the correct English word for göteborgare according to Norstedts Stora Sve-Eng Ordbok”.

"Summer Moved On" with A-ha

The last day of my vacation is here…
…some reflections:
  • This was the last summer I spend over a week in Karlskrona (if I’m not guaranteed sun all the time) so I guess it’s an ending of an era.
  • The best period started with the superb U2 concert and the V.I.P/free drinks afterwards, continued through a weekend with Fredrik makin’ pancakes and a very nice brunch at my place, some relaxed days in Gothenburg with gym and lunch with Andreas, and then ended with the fabulous Pride week in Stockholm.
  • The best summer blockbuster 2005 was "Batman Begins". The best book I read were "No Tears for Queers" by Johan Hilton.
  • I’ve gained 1,5kg this vacation. Hmmm. I guess I have to boost the power-walks in the morning before going to London…
  • I have actually missed the big hit of the summer. If it even exists? I think that for the first time in…well…ever, I honestly can’t attach a summer to a specific song. Strange. Read in some paper that it was that Crazy Frog song…but well…it hasn’t been played anywhere near as often as the hits from the previous summer, that’s for sure.
  • I’ve spent a bit more money than expected, but I’ve drunk a whole lot less whine, got very much less sun-burned, and had far less snogging than preferred...

Well...as you se - it really isn’t time to get sentimental.
I hope it will be a great autumn with a London trip and my first visit to New York…and I hope it will be a lot of fun parties and adventures with all my friends.

The only thing I could skip is really to go up at 6 a.m. and go to work…
…but I guess meeting Erik, Hilda, David, Eeva and all the others at work can make that bearable also.

Hey ho, lets go.

"Wonderwall" with Oasis

I have got a new neighbour in the flat above mine.

I don’t know who it is, but I was glad that the previous family moved out since they had small children that woke up about 5 or 6 a.m. at weekends and started to run around in their apartment so I thought my ceiling would fall down.

I don’t think the new neighbour have children. At least I haven’t heard any.
What he (or she or they) DO have is a stereo.
Nothing strange about that, and I guess I’m not the one to say anything about playing loud music. Nor can I complain about him playing at late hours since I only hear the music during the days and evenings.
No, the thing I think is a bit strange is this:
He has - for two days - played the same song over and over again!

Wonderwall with Oasis.

Not that it is a bad song…
I actually adored Oasis in the 90’s and “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” is still one of my top five albums of all times, and “Definitely Maybe” somewhere in top 10.
But still…
Repeatedly.
Now.
In 2005?

Anyway, it opens up for a lot of speculations:

Is he heartbroken and listens to his favourite love song?
Is he under 20 years old and has just discovered that Oasis was once a fantastic rock band?
Has he been murdered and the serial killer has timed the stereo to play this song between some specific hours of the day to send out a secret message to the police to help them find his new victim?

Who knows?

All together now!
…and after all…you’re my wonderwall…

"Oh Carolina" with Shaggy

And so - once again - it is time to pack your bags and go home.
This time with bigger regretts than the last time in Karlskrona, since Stockholm and Pride have been a terrific time.
But I guess everything must come to an end.

No time for blogging then...there are things everywhere that needs to be packed.

I give the song of today away to our swedish gold-medalist from yeasterday.
Go Carolina!

"Gay Bar" with Electric Six

Since the rain were pouring down yesterday – which by the way took some fun out of this years Pride parade – me and Fredrik decided to skip the Bodies without Organs concert in the Pride park (and also Martin Stenmarck and a proposal from Lotta Bromé to her girlfriend, we found out later) and go directly to a Gay Club called Lino.

That turned out to be one of the best decisions of the week!
(Thanks for the tip, Tomas!)

Not only did we arrive just before the rain started to actually explode down from the sky and about 20 minutes before 500 persons were queuing to get in to the place…it was also a very, very fun evening with lots of good looking people and dancing for hours.

I guess the only downside is that I currently is fighting a huge hang-over (while Fredrik is already at home in Gothenburg taking it easy) while trying to get my party-mood up to speed for our last night out in Stockholm this Pride…

Well, here we go!
Bring me another glass of wine.
Patricia here we come!!

"But Not Tonight" with Jimmy Somerville

Pride party report:
The big party at Berns the day we arrived is still the best party yet, even if the Schlagernight yesterday was funny as hell.
Today we have decided to rest from the partying and go to the movie to see "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"...and well...maybe we have ONE beer afterwards.
But no party today.
Maybe tomorrow.
But not tonight.

"La De Swinge" with Bobbysocks

The Schlagernight (Melodifestivalen & ESC music) at Stockholm Pride this year was a completely success!

Sanna Nielsen, Fredrik Kempe, Shakin' Fredrik (!), Annika Burman (!!), Nicole (!!!), Nana, Linda Bentzing, Annelie Rydé, Xandee, Lasse Holm, Kikki, Bettan (= a reunited "Chips"), Anders&Karin Glenmark, a reunited Bobbysocks (!!!!) and of course Arja Saionmaa - the big diva (and star) of the evening.

To make Edward af Silén responsible was a simply strike of pure genius and I hope they keep him for next year also.
Applaudes!

"Pride (In the Name of Love)" with U2

Yes I know.
I promised that the U2-songs should end with the one yesterday…
…well…
…I guess this was a opportunity I couldn’t miss.

Tomorrow I and my good friends Johan and Fredrik will go to Stockholm to the yearly Pride-festival (Now you get it? Duh!) for five days of party, relaxing, and meeting new people.

I think it will be great!
I have really been looking forward to this, and I have decided that not even a bit of rain shall depress me this time.

Keep it coming!

Now I just have to pack my bag…bags…or something. (I really suck on packing before travelling)
And of course do a Pride soundtrack.
And do my laundry.

…and I guess there will be a sort of break in my blogging…
But I’ll be back!

As often as I can.

"Crumbs from Your Table" with U2

This summer my friend and I have started a tradition of inviting each other to Sunday brunches, and yesterday was my turn.

It went really well (much due to my friend Fredrik who had helped me with ideas for food, and who hade made about 100 pancakes with me the evening before) and it is a really nice thing to do.

Meet your friends, discuss your weekend – and eat tremendously too much food.

At the downside it is a bit expensive…and if you try to loose some weight it is devastating…not just the brunch…but all food that’s left afterwards.

…and since I still think about the concert I give you one more U2 song…
