"A Pain That I'm Used To" with Depeche Mode

Today we're actually celebrating X-mas here in The Azylum...but more about that tomorrow I guess.
Today it is time for this week's chart!

My life right now is mostly devoted to the new TV-season, so my music chart is quite static.
Some new Depeche Mode songs have slipped out to the net and they're really good. It looks very promising to have concert tickets for their Scandinavium appearance next year.
Jay-jay has been waiting to enter the charts for several weeks now, and in a slow week he took his chance.
Darin just slipped into number ten in the last minute, after a strong competition with Hello Saferide's latest single. This is an album track from his latest album, and I know everyone will hate this track (pathetic lyrics! children's choir!!) but I really can't help myself liking it...

"Looking for Love" with September

My blogging ideas nowadays are not what they should be...so lets do a "Flip or Flop" again, since we like it so much...and it is Thursday. The "Flip or Flop"-day after all.
The song of today is Septembers new single "Looking for Love".

D-man: Flop
"For a gym-group-session a la body pump this works nicely and I bet it'll also move some bodies around the dance floor...but to me it's a bit dull. I'd expected more. The thing is I've heard the same thing before. It smells of old socks rather than fresh. Brings back memories from the days during the 90's when I was out clubbin' with E-type and Stakka Bo. These retarded men were not kind enough to buy me beer therefore I tied 'em up and forced 'em to listen to this old sock over and over again. Or perhaps I'm the one with a faulty brain. Go figure"

E-man:
Flop
"I'm hesitating. Good stuff in it self, but since it is inevitably measured against "Satellites" it just doesn't hold up. Not catchy enough, which is critical for me in this type of music. Had this come first and "Satellites" later, I would probably have flipped both. But now I don't. Sorry September, but I'm (reluctantly) flopping you this time."

K-man: Flop

"Some part of me likes the disco beat and if...let's say Dannii Minouge...had done this with a real producer it might have been an ok dance tune. But now... Hm. This comes across as a sort of B-class Da Buzz-act. And I don't mean that in a good punky kinda' way. It might still be a small hit on commercial radio, but for me... Well, I guess it's the end of September in many ways this week."

So now you know!
It’s a Flop.

No question about that.

"Morning Papers" with Prince

Everyday at my power walk in the morning I pass a newsstand with the free morning paper "Metro". Since there are no Metros on my buss 17, I always take two when I pass the stand.
One for me - and one extra just to make someone on the bus happy.
It is quite fun.
Sometimes people ask if they can take it ad thank med, sometimes people just snatch it and look tired. Either way I feel like I've made a good thing every morning.

Today a man took about 40 or 50 Metros right in front of me at the newsstand...
...maybe he makes his whole bus happy?

Or sells fish?
Or maybe he just needed them for some large papier-mâché build at home...

"Take it Easy" with The Fugees

Well, since this song where released to public dissection today, let's go all "Flip or Flop" over it right away - even if it is not Thursday.
The song I speak about is of course The Fugees new single "Take it Easy"

D-man: Flop
"Fugees? Really... I'm a tad disappointed. Had anticipated their comeback to be celebrated all week, but not if it's gonna sound like this. Me dislike. Wyclef (apart from having a freakin' weird name) is usually as sweets for the ears, but this time the bag did contain one bad piece of candy."

E-man: Flip
"DING-DING-DING-AWHOOOO! Flippety-doo-daa! Oh, I'm so happy. Some fat beat hip hop on the table at last, and Fugees reunited at that, with as heavy a sound as they ever had. As usual with the Fugees, Lauryn could have pulled it off on her own, but this is good s***. The only context where Pras can do anything well: Accompanied by Lauryn and Wyclef. Oh, if you didn't catch the verdict: This is a flip!! :)"

K-man: Flop
"Oh, this is clearly not my cup of tea. Is this really a song? A big comeback single? It feels just like an intro for something? Maybe for a better song... I remember Fugees as some sort of rap-based cover band: Killing Me Softly and all that. (Did they do anything that wasn’t sampled or a cover?) Now it seems that the members clearly seem more talented on their own than in the group...and by the way: Lauryn Hill sounds like Crazy Frog when she starts to shout "bing!". Sorry guys. I flop this."

So now you know!
It’s a Flop...but not a complete disaster.

"Neverending Story" with Limahl

Okay, today it is time to celebrate again.
I know this blog may seem to have been turned into some sort of birthday-card substitute…
…but since it is my fellow room-mate (and Flip&Flop:er) here at work I of course have to congratulate him.
Hip hip hurray for David! 26 years old (young) today.

As a present from me to him (well, I’m saving money for New York…I have to be cheap!!) I let him choose the song of today…
…and well…
Let’s say I take no responsibilities for this!

"Spelling Bee Interlude" with Missy Elliott

I’ve just seen "Spellbound"- a lovely little movie about the National Spelling Bee in USA by Jeffrey Blitz. Blitz follows eight little nerds and their (sometimes very scary) parents on their way to the national final, and it is funny, impressive and very, very strange to see. Really the movie tip of the week!
…and when I’m into discussing nerds…
Just don’t miss "FCZ", Fridays 21.00 (9 pm) at ZTV. 15 nerds…and here we’re really talking nerds…not just small pre-pubertal intelligent kids…try to learn how to play football/soccer so they can take on the Swedish champions.
Really, just as fun as it sounds.

Maybe one day late, but it is as hot and crisp as ever; I finally give you my music chart this week!

Lena Philipsson - Unga Pojkar & Äldre Män
10
/NE/10/01/Rachel Stevens - Nothing Good About This Goodbye

A new week, a new number one, and a totally new song and artist.
I’ve never heard of Danielle previous to this single, but this is really, really good. For a long time I just reacted each time they played this song at P3 and thought "Hey, that’s a good song!"...and then I’ve forgotten about it. But now I’ve finally put it into my iPod Mini and it became the most played in no time (and it also helps me jump-start my power walks every morning).
Two songs from Rachel Stevens also managed to enter the chart this week. Her new album is a personal favourite right now, and with the exceptions from her two singles (where the latest of them - "I Said Never Again" - has
already been on the chart...it was actually at the number two spot for a week), I think these two are the best songs on the "Come and Get It"-album. English chart-pop when it is at its best!
The first complete "Flip" in our "Flip or Flop" contest is another example of that. Dannii Minogue continues to release dance-friendly tunes and to look exactly like her sister in her videos...and I have nothing against that. Keep up your good work, girl!
As for the other songs on the chart, I can say that Gorillaz and Andy Bell continue to be favourites of mine, and so does the Pussycat Dolls (even if they fall to number seven).
Lena Ph is this weeks biggest looser, and I guess that’s what happens if you release a mediocre song in an autumn jammed with good songs...

New chart next Friday!

"Die Mauer" with Ebba Grön

I know.
It is Friday and this week’s list should be here right now...
...but you have to wait until tomorrow (or read it here since I always publish it in my Swedish blog also) since I will use this space today to congratulate one of my best friends on his birthday.

Congratulations Dane!
I hope you have a lovely birthday in Paris, and that we can meet soon and celebrate it!

It was hard to pick a specific song of the day, since there are many, many that reminds me of Daniel and the things we’ve done together...
...but in the end there was just two:
"Supernatural" with Army of Lovers and then the song I choose.
...a song always reminding me of a certain table in Magaluf...

I adore you, darling!

"Perfection (Turn Me Upside Down)" with Dannii Minogue & The Soul Seekerz

Well, let’s have another "Flip or Flop" then. It IS Thursday and Thursdays are the real "Flip or Flop"-day in our room here at work, (yesterday was just and extra since Fredrik was visiting, and also because it is fun and – last but not least – it gives me something to blog about. And for the last time now: "Flip or Flop" is a little game to find out if we think a new single will be a hit (Flip) or not (Flop). The second single to be put to test this week is the Radio Edit of "Perfection (Turn Me Upside Down)" with Dannii Minogue & The Soul Seekerz.

D-man: Flip
"I say grooovy. Would make my ass shake and rattle on any dance floor. Has sort of a sweet disco-feeling sound to it. Could have been a bit more upbeat though, but I say flip anyways."

E-man: Flip
"Alright, I'll lay my usual grumpiness aside and flip this. Although not my kind of music, I think it holds it's own for the genre. Nice transitions, and a voice that sounds like Kylie but without the voice coaching. I could dance to this. Provided, as always, that I was really drunk. The only problem I have is that they had to twist the pronunciation of the word "perfect" to fit in. But hey, I can live with that."

K-man: Flip
"Maybe not as good as "Put the Needle on It" or "Who Do You Love Now" and still far away from her sisters hits (even if I think Dannii rather aims to dominate the dance floors rather than the charts) – but still...it is a very nice dance-tune...and the girl is a Minogue for gods sake!! She actually IS Kylie in the video...at least the best look-a-like I've ever seen. Of course I will flip this."

So now you know!
It’s our first complete Flip since the start of this very nice activity.
By the way.
T.G.I.F tomorrow.
I’m so tired.

"Domino Dancing" with West End Girls

Today it's an extra "Flip or Flop" in our room here at work since we have a visiting guest-voice; Fredrik - a former member (and founder) of our little room-community. As you know by now the "Flip or Flop" is a little game to find out if we think a new single will be a hit (Flip) or not (Flop). The single to be put to test this week is "Domino Dancing" with West End Girls.

D-man: Flop

"Gum-chewing west end baby girls aren't supposed to whine to the tunes of Pet Shop Boys ever. I say the original is better, even though it isn't that much to my liking either. Neither is Pet Shop Boys. Nor would I prefer any of the west end girls as a pet."

E-man: Flop
"Sorry to be the ever-sceptical one, but what the F***?! Pointless crappy cover with nothing added, but quite a bit subtracted as far as creative content goes. It might actually get some airtime, but since no one will notice it playing, I don't think that counts. Down the friggin-froggin-frackin drain!"

K-man: Flop
"First A*Teens...and now the PSB*Teens? I love ABBA and liked the A*Teens, since they brought ABBA back and updated their sound. I love Pet Shop Boys and I...loath this. There just no raison d´être for this cover. It doesn't ad a thing to the song (which, I must confess, I don't hold as one of my favourite PSB songs), the production is dull as hell...and by the way; the Pet Shop Boys are still alive and kicking and don't need a cover band outside cheap gay bars...if even there...maybe best to keep it as karaoke. Just ignore this one, please."

...and the guest-voice of the week:

F-man: Flop
"I really think it's a sin to destroy a good son like this. This cover does not bring anything new to the world - it is just a bad copy. The West End Girls are jus being boring."

So now you know!
It's clearly a Flop.
I just hope everyone out there gets that now...

"If The Milk Turns Sour" with John Murphy & David Hughes

This morning I found milk in my fridge that was noted "Best before September 11th". When I tried to pour it down the sink it came out as water + Keso - not a very good way to start the day (and week).
When I arrived to work I took a Latte from our coffee machine as I always do – but when I started to drink it I almost puked on my computer.
Once again I had been subjected to sour milk. Twice in an hour.
An just a moment ago my plum I took from the company fruit basket turned out to be full of mould.
Hurray! All food is against me today.
Maybe this means it is a great week to start a diet and get slimmer before my New York trip?

"Get Me to the Church on Time" from My Fair Lady

I’ve just come home from church where I have used my right as a Swedish citizen and voted in the church election 2005. Not that I am a notorious church-goer - I’m actually not that religious at all and I have far gone planes of leaving the church before October this year – but I feel it is important to shut out all racist, gay bashing, women-haters from the church, just so they know that it is them that not belong to the church…not us.
Use your right to vote!
Otherwise it is only people who are a lot more hateful and dumber than you who will…

"Time After Time" with Cyndi Lauper

Today I saw the new movie from Ulf Malmros: "Tjenare Kungen!", about two girls starting a punk band in the 80’s. I try to write a complete review in my Swedish blog later, but for a one sentence review I would say: It was nice but nothing new under the sun (we’ve seen band falling apart on screen before – and the theme of "girls can’t work together in groups" are getting a bit tired), not as funny as I expected, and far from the nostalgia explosion I wanted…
…but that said; a movie that includes hits from Ebba Grön, Alphaville, and last but not least Cyndi Lauper’s "Time After Time" must be taken seriously at some degree…so maybe go and rent it when the DVD comes out!

"Dare" with Gorillaz feaut. Shaun Ryder

It's that time of the week again...it's Friday!! And everyone knows Friday is Chartday here at the blog:

This Week/Last Week/Peak/Weeks on Chart/Artist – Song

01/03/01/02/Gorillaz feaut. Shaun Ryder - Dare
02/06/02/02/Pussycat Dolls - Don't Cha
03/NE/03/01/Lena Philipsson - Unga Pojkar & Äldre Män
04/01/01/02/Andy Bell - Crazy
05
/NE/05/01/Le Sport - Tell No One About Tonight
06
/02/02/02/Mauro Scocco - Kall Stjärna
07/NE/07/01/Bodies without Organs - Sunshine in the Rain (Italo Mix)
08
/04/04/02/Robbie Williams - Tripping
09/NE/09/01/Sagirei - Rhythm is a Dancer
10/NE/10/01/Cat5 - Sexy

Gorillaz takes the top spot with their best song ever, but the P*Dolls are hanging close.
Lena Ph started the week as a flop, but overcome her obstacles and convinced me right in time.
Le Sport is a radio-favourite that has grown and grown over the weeks, and finally managed to take a spot on my chart.
Bodies without Organs releases their seventh (!!) single for their debut album, and it's one of my favourites from "Prototype". The single has seven remixes, and I have fallen for the Italo Mix.
And for Sagirei - I don't know anything about them, but one of my friends sent me this fabulous cover and I fell in love immediately.
Cat5...well...I guess it's just a song you can't get out off your head once you've heard it...but if that's a good thing...hmmm...I really don't know. I give the girls a tenth spot to start with...and at least they can brag about having kicked out Oasis from a forth week on the chart at the last minute.
Join us next week for a new chart! ;)

"Unga Pojkar & Äldre Män" with Lena Philipsson

Time for the second "Flip or Flop" in our room here at work.

The "Flip or Flop" is a little game to find out if we think a new single will be a hit (Flip) or not (Flop). The single to be put to test this week is "Unga Pojkar & Äldre Män" with Lena Philipsson.

David: Flip

“I say FLIP. Really. A bit curious 'bout that part where she claims to have "tried" young boys though. What did she do to them? I mean, seriously. Will they grow up retarded? Couldn't she at least have gone for young men? Younger than that and it's illegal.”

Erik: Flop
“I think the song is basically good. However, I expect throughout the song for it to take off and give me more action. It never does, which in my book makes it weak and nondescript. I don't even think it's going to get more airtime than the usual "New song from famous artist" serving. Flop it is.”

Ken: Flip
“I really hated this the first time I heard it...or rather; I was hugely disappointed. Arabic influenced comp feels so Sertab 2003, the production feels thin and low-budget, and the song never really takes off. But anyhow...there's something - maybe just that it's Lena - that I like and that gets stuck after listening to it 3-4 times. It's far from "Det Gör Ont", it's even not a new "Delirium...and I still can't figure out how two icons of the eighties misses the opportunity to do something beautifully retro when it's high fashion...but even so...I say it's a flip....for me. But I don't think she will dominate any charts or radio channels.”

So now you know!
It's another Flip with a reservation.

Like Robbie last week.

"Hundragubbesjubiléeum" from Emil i Lönneberga

I’ve just come home from a nice little movie preview. The latest movie from Curtis Hanson, called "In Her Shoes", with Cameron Diaz and a marvellous Toni Collete. I will write a review in my Swedish blog as soon as possible, but I have to tell you right now that it’s clearly a movie to catch if you want something different from the normal tearjerker or rom-com…but still be in that area.

…and now to something completely different!
Today it’s 100 days since this blog started and time for a little recap of the songs from 75-99…but first a correction:
The latest recaps have actually been one number off…. I missed a song in the first recap and the numbers have been wrong ever since.
So, number 76 is actually number 15, and the songs previous listed from 15 to 75 is actually +1…

76 (15) "Doctor, I'm Only Seeing Dark" with Scissor Sisters

…but from now on it is correct! Here they are:

77 "Brother and Sister" with Erasure
78 "In Denial" with Pet Shop Boys & Kylie Minouge
79 "The Importance of Being Idle" with Oasis
80 "747" with Kent
81 "Push the Button" with Sugababes
82 "Desperate Love" with Pernilla Wahlgren
83 "Vinnaren Tar Allt" with Gunilla Backman
84 "Patience" with George Michael
85 "Television" with Marcus Landgren
86 "I Will Survive" with Gloria Gaynor
87 "London Calling" with The Clash
88 "London Nights" with London Boys
89 "Piccadilly Circus" with Pernilla Wahlgren
90 "London" with Pet Shop Boys
91 "Back to Life" with Soul II Soul
92 "A Beatles Medley" with GöteborgsMusiken
93 "September All Over" with September
94 "Tripping" with Robbie Williams
95 "Crazy" with Andy Bell
96 "Gimme Gimme Gimme" with ABBA
97 "Wonkas Welocme Song" by Danny Elfman
98 "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with Nirvana
99 "Call Me" with Spagna

And then the important (well...) number 100. At first I thought of something with "Celebration" in it...but that felt so cheap...so then I tumbled with the thought to pick a song from the movie...like one with Sonny&Cher.

But then I finally decided for a celebration-type-thingie from a childrens record (and from a famous swedish book; "Emil i Lönneberga"). Hip hip hurray!

"Call Me" with Spagna

I miss phones.
Not that I don’t have one.
I do. I actually have several.
I am a notorious speaker in my mobile-phone…
…and I spend a lot of time talking into my Cisco IP Phone (like the one they have in "24") at work.
But what I miss is talking into my regular, basic, standard, call-it-what-you-want phone at home.

When I was a teenager I could spend my days at school with my best friend Daniel, and then go home and speak with the same Daniel for hours by the phone.
When I went to the university I bought a extended phone cord, since I talked so much with my friend, that I needed to be able to move around while talking to get the basic things done (this was the golden years before the wireless phones attacked the home of every man).

Then something happened.
I got internet.
And I guess this is where the downfall begun since the first years of internet you had to disconnect your phone to be able to connect your modem…
…’cause people stopped calling each other more and more (and mental note: I’m not talking mobile phones here…that’s obviously an increase of large proportions) just to chat or say hello.

Nowadays no one calls - I get e-mails from my friends.
The first thing I do after nine hours at the office is to go home, start my computer, connect to MSN and log into QX - and put my self in front of another computer screen.
Otherwise no one will contact me (of course there are exceptions from the rule, but that is basically it.)

"If you’re not on-line, I think you have other things to do"

Ironically, now a days it is practically free to use the phone in the evenings.
..and yesterday "Skype" (a way to call your friends with your computer) was sold to eBay for $30.000.000.000…

I guess it’s hard to see a trend where people starts to call my regular, basic, standard, call-it-what-you-want phone at home again…

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" with Nirvana

I don't know what I was thinking this morning, but I found an after shave waaaaay back in my bathroom cabinet and decided that this would be the day to test it...
...and now I smell so much that I can't hardly breathe (and I don't want to think how people in my direct surroundings feel) and it's just feels awful.

...and yes. I have tried to wash it away...
But it just doesn't work!

"Wonkas Welocme Song" by Danny Elfman

Soon I will go to bed, and that means a quite nice weekend is over; the crayfish-party at Björkö, the two excellent movies - "Crash" and "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" (from which I pick an excellent song for the day) - and a lot of "O.C"…
…but it also means that the world (at least the part with time zones earlier or the same as ours) has survived its first 11th of September an uneven year in the 21th century without any major tragedies.

2001 we had the TwinTowers falling down.
2003 we had the assassination of Anna Lindh.
2005…
Well. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a few hours more.

"Gimme Gimme Gimme" with ABBA

Yesterday I heard 1.20 from Madonna's up-comming single "Hung up".
My god such a hit.
It's gonna be HUGE on the dancefloors this autumn.
(I'm actually quite disappointed that I'm not allowed to ask for it at clubs this weekend).
She's gonna have a HUGE comeback.
Again.

But if you combine Madonna with ABBA...
...you don't need to be a brain-surgeon to understand that you will get a hit then, do ya?

10/06/01/04/Sugababes – Push the Button

There so much good new music out right now, that I'm almost in agony trying to decide what songs there should be on my list...
...but after much thinking Andy Bell's party tune took the number one spot from Scocco's "returning to my sound in the 80's".
The Gorillaz is number one this week in England (even if Gwen Stefani's "Cool" was the song they played everywhere in London) and "Dare" has to be one of thier most accessible songs ever...and by the way...do they ever sound the same from one song to another? I guess it doesn't matter when you release a song as good as this.
Robbie's latest we discussed
yesterday, but Pussycat Dolls is a bit of surprise here...and it is not just that they where at G.A.Y and where hyped in "Attitude" (but I confess that's how I discovered them) - I simply can't resist that song.
Sugababes stays at the list for the fourth week...the only tune which has been there all the way since the start.

I wonder if it can survive another week? I've heard there is a Lena Ph single just waiting to be heard at Monday... =)

"Tripping" with Robbie Williams

Yesterday we had our first "Flip or Flop" here in our room at work.

The "Flip or Flop" is a little game to find out if we think a new single will be a hit (Flip) or not (Flop), and the first single to be put under the magnifying glass was "Tripping" with Robbie Williams.

David: Flip
“Robbie goes Bobby! I love the chorus, but I dislike the rap-part”

Erik: Flop
“I agree with Ken and Dave that the rap-part sucks, but no worse than the rest… It’s not good Ska. It’s not good Robbie. Baaaaah!”

Ken: Flip
“At first I thought it was awful, but I’m getting used to it…and now I also love the chorus. And the rap-part…well…it feels very Robbie, but a bit out of place in this song. It’s a hit.”

So now you know!
It's a Flip...with a reservation.

"September All Over" with September

The rain is pouring down, after some days with never ending sun and a 30 degree London-trip...
...and I finally really don’t care!

It is OK with September.
It shall be nice with some autumn.
To be allowed to stay inside and watch TV.
And To be able to wear all the warm, good-looking clothes I bought in London.
=)

"A Beatles Medley" with GöteborgsMusiken

I’ve just had a very strange lunch experience (and yes, technically it is still my lunch so I’m not blogging during work time) outside my office.
When the weather is fine we usually take our lunch outside and eat it on the pier, and since the sun is shining today I took my broccoli and headed for the elevators.
But when I got out at the little square in front of my office a tent had been risen, chairs where put in front of it, and inside a full brass-band called "GöteborgsMusiken" where playing old and new tunes for a surprised audience of lunchers.
So I suddenly found myself sitting (with the sun shining in my face) on a chair, eating my broccoli, listening to various songs from the Beatles medley that is the song of today via Y.M.C.A to Tjajkovskiji’s Nutcracker suite.
That’s what I call a nice lunch!
